Worth knowing

That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Rotobrush Register & Grille Cleaning: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

If you own a Rotobrush system and the register and grille cleaning attachment is worn, stripped, or leaving visible streaks behind, we stock Rotobrush-compatible parts and install them for San Jose homeowners. Most register and grille cleaning jobs run between $95 and $180 installed, depending on the attachment’s condition and whether it needs a full head replacement or just new brush tips. Owners usually discover the part has failed mid-job: the brush stops spinning true against the grille fins, the bristles flatten out against the metal, or the head wobbles on the shaft and leaves an uneven, patchy clean.

Which Rotobrush Models This Applies To

The register and grille cleaning head fits the Rotobrush aiR+ and the older Rotobrush eBoss and R2 series. The compatibility gotcha is the shaft collar: aiR+ heads ride on a 1/2-inch drive shaft with a locking notch, while the older eBoss uses a set-screw collar without the notch. If you order the wrong one, the head will spin loose and scar the grille finish. The part number is printed on the plastic hub on most models, but if it’s worn smooth, measure the shaft opening: 1/2 inch means aiR+, 7/16 inch means you have the older series.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Rotobrush’s own replacement heads run $55 to $85 for the hub-and-bristle assembly. Quality aftermarket kits from Air-Care and Gardner run $30 to $50 and hold up well for residential use, but the bristle density is noticeably lower on the cheaper ones. We carry both on the truck and install the OEM part unless you tell us otherwise. Kestrel Air Duct San Jose is an independent service provider, not affiliated with Rotobrush, but we’ve been working on their equipment long enough to know which corners the aftermarket cuts and which ones don’t matter.

Signs Your Rotobrush Register & Grille Cleaning Attachment Is Failing

  • The brush head wobbles when it spins. This means the shaft collar is worn or the set screw has backed out. Left alone, the wobble rounds out the hub and you’re looking at a full replacement instead of a re-tighten.
  • Streaks remain on the grille after a pass. The nylon bristles are bent at the base, not just dirty. Bristles are heat-welded into the hub; on San Jose’s older homes, built-up cooking grease and decades of dust bake onto the grille and accelerate the flattening.
  • You hear a clicking or chattering noise at the head. A cracked hub or a broken bristle tuft catching on the grille. The plastic gets brittle with age and UV exposure, even stored in a garage.
  • The brush stops spinning under light pressure. The drive shaft or the locking pin is stripped. This is the end of the road for that head; the fix is replacement, not adjustment.
  • Visible rust on the metal shaft or collar. Humidity in a San Jose garage or a van that lives outdoors will do this. Rusted collars don’t seat properly and the head will slip under load.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote in the San Jose area, written in dollars before any work starts:

  • Aftermarket replacement head, installed: $95 to $120
  • OEM Rotobrush head, installed: $140 to $180
  • Collar or set-screw repair only: $40 to $60 when the head itself is still fine

The range depends mostly on which series you own and whether the collar is salvageable. Fiberglass-free nylon bristles in the OEM heads last roughly 150 to 250 home jobs; the aftermarket usually tops out around 100. Every replacement includes a quick test pass on one of your own grilles so you can see the brush spinning true before we leave. The work is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing, which means if the part fails or the install is wrong within the year, we return and make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

Replacing a register and grille head is not a high-tension repair like a garage door spring or a live electrical panel, so a careful owner with the right Allen key and the exact part can do it themselves. The honest risk is ordering the wrong series, stripping the set screw, or cracking the new hub during installation. If your time is worth more than the difference between a $55 part and a $140 installed job, call us. Dale Whitmore and the crew have seen enough rounded-out hubs and cross-threaded collars to know that the install is rarely the problem; matching the part is. You can reach us at (669) 220-7869.
